The Indian Academy of Sciences was established in 1934 by Sir C V Raman with the objective of creating a body that could champion the cause of science in India.
Over the years, the Academy has contributed significantly in this direction through different activities in the spheres of science education, science dissemination by publication of scholarly journals and books, and the public recognition of scientific excellence by electing outstanding scientists into the Fellowship. It has about one thousand and fifty of the leading scientists of the country among its Fellowship and about fifty of the leading scientists of the world as Honorary Fellows.

Existing institutional structures and mechanisms in a country as large and as diverse as ours are often inadequate in meeting the challenges that the evolving global order has thrown up in the past decades. Therefore, tAcT was established in order to expand the activities that can address the above objectives. The initial focus of tAcT will be to
Organize programmes aimed toward science education for school and college students, to augment the existing curricula and to develop interest in science
Establish a strong Visitors programme by instituting Endowment Chairs through which we can invite leaders in science from across the world, and
Encourage industry internship programmes for students in order to enable them to gain hands-on experience of working in industry, and also to nurture Academy-Industry interactions.
